I volunteered with VMG for 4 weeks in July-August 2017. The experience was nothing short of amazing. I interned at the newspaper The Daily Statesman in Accra, where I wrote various stories – mainly about the political parties and the upcoming Presidential election, but also about social issues, social media and even about my own experience in Ghana. I was warmly welcomed by both my coworkers at the paper and by the VMG team, whom I stayed with. Everyone were so kind and helpful, and made me feel very much at home – even though I was miles away from Norway. The team arranged everything; food, accomodation, travel, phone simcard and even laundry. The hospitality they showed me was simply outstanding. Outside of work, I got to visit Cape Coast, Kakum National Park, a local bar, the Art Centre, the Black Star Square and the Christ The King Of Kings School – a non-government funded school for disadvantaged children in Jamestown. My time with VolunteerMatch Ghana has been very rewarding. Not only did I get to experience a country with rich culture, interesting history and wonderful people, I also received a valuable insight in Ghanaian and African politics. As a journalism student, this has already given me several advantages – particularly as I aspire to work within the fields of either international journalism or conflict reporting. Thank you so much for making my time in Accra amazing!
