My friend/co-worker and I volunteered at the Waaw School last summer. We spent 4 weeks in Cusco, and could not have asked for a better experience. It was both of our first times volunteering abroad, so before arriving we were a bit nervous. However, once we arrived, we realized how great this program was. Pickup at the airport was very smooth. We then were taken to the language school, where we were given more information and a chance to ask any questions we had. After that, the volunteer coordinator brought us to our homestay and introduced us to Carmen, the woman who would be hosting us. On our first day at the Waaw school, we were picked up at Carmen's home by the volunteer coordinator and she walked us to the school, guiding us there and giving us more information about the school and program. The program was well structured, and a true blessing for the children who take part in it. The kids at the school are full of energy, so come prepared to be hands on! They are also respectful and loving. They truly appreciate the volunteers. Every Friday at the school, there is a small trip: a park, a hike, etc. These trips were great experiences for the kids and the volunteers to bond. It was also a great way to see the city with locals. Speaking of locals, Eliana, the teacher at the school, is amazing. She is hardworking and wants the students to get the most out of the school and volunteers to get the most out of their experience. The homestay was fantastic. Our host was hospitable and wanted us to learn. What I most appreciated was that she ate meals (which were different every single day and were always wonderful) with us, talking to us the entire time. Our conversations ranged from educational to hysterical. She has such a great personality. We still keep in touch! For anyone who is thinking of volunteering, I highly recommend that you give this program a try!
