Difference between Community Based Organizations and Volunteer Placement Organizations

Throughout Volunteer Alliance we refer to two different types of Organizations. They are:

  • Community Based Organization (CBO), and
  • Volunteer Placement Organization (VPO)

A Community Based Organization is an organization that hosts Volunteers at a single Community Based project. To create a Community Based Organization profile you must be operating on behalf of an organization that hosts Volunteers at a single Community Based project.

Whereas a Volunteer Placement Organization is an organization that places Volunteers with a Community Based Organization. Volunteer Placement Organizations may place Volunteers at more than one Community Based Organization. To create a Volunteer Placement Organization profile, you must be operating on behalf of an organization that places Volunteers with one or more Community Based Organizations. You must also have a web address from which Volunteers can request to be placed with one or more Community Based Organizations.

The key difference is that Volunteer Placement Organizations do not host Volunteers. They partner with Community Based Organizations and offer additional services like pre departure orientation, in country support etc. - which is great for young, first time Volunteers.

What is unique about Volunteer Alliance, is that we allow you to Volunteer direct - to contact Organizations in 50+ countries directly and request to volunteer. See How it Works & Payment System for more information.
