Organization Description
The Cape Town based Non-Profit Organization, Youth Solutions Africa, was founded by community leader John Philmon. For over 10 years the organization has been involved with feeding projects, job creation programs, rehabilitation, education, shelter placements, family re-unifications, re-integrations etc. of homeless children, youth and adults who live on the streets of the Cape Town CBD and surrounding communities. Youth Solutions Africa works extensively in the Philippi Township with the children there, as well as the teenagers, focusing on education as a means to stop the cycle of poverty, and give the children a chance at an education they could otherwise not have access to. We have a few different projects for the Volunteers to assist us with - our kindergarten, which is an Early Childhood Development Programme, Our Children's Aftercare Programme, Our daily Soup Kitchen, our Women's Skills Training, our Homeless Shelter, as well as various other projects and events.

Soup Kitchen

We run a successful Soup Kitchen in Salt River, where we provide one meal per day (we alternate between breakfast and lunch) for those living on the streets, and also for those staying in our Homeless Shelter, as well as the children in the area who often have no food at home. We provide a proper meal, consisting of rice or pap, meat or chicken and vegetables. We serve breakfast on most days of the week, and lunch on Tuesdays and Fridays. The average amount of people per day is 80 – 100.

Homeless Shelter

We run a homeless shelter in Cape Town. It is for men and women, though most of the facilities cater for men who now also have a skills training programme. We have fundraised for blankets, and we provide the men and women with a bed to sleep on, a blanket, warm shower and a hot meal, as well as access to a social worker twice a week. At the moment, we are lacking in space for the amount of people needing shelter. We are hoping to build more dorms this year, and are currently fundraising for this – we need to build separate ablution facilities for the women as well, and also create a Women’s Skills Training Programme. The Central City Improvement District works closely with us in this regard.

Skills Training Programme for Youth and Adult Men living in the Shelter

Our newly launched Skills Training Programme began on the 20th July 2015. In this programme we are teaching panel beating as a skill. The trainees that go through the training will eventually be certified, have a letter of recommendation, and be assisted with their CV creation for the job market. They are busy with their training during weekdays, and we keep getting more requests from people wanting to join the Skills Training. Among the trainees are also Community Court referrals of youth in conflict with the law, to live a sustained life instead of turning to crime.

Kindergarten Project

Through the help of an organisation, Driving Spirit, we were able to raise funds to build a kindergarten for the children of Olieboom Township in Philippi, Cape Town. It has now been built, and we are busy with teacher-skills training and it is currently open, but it is still in its early stages. We have had the support of The Expresso SABC TV Show and Builders Warehouse, along with Thundafund and Driving Spirit, to make this kindergarten a reality. The kindergarten is made up of three classrooms, and we currently have about 50 children that are in need of education. We provide a hot meal for the children daily as well. The kindergarten is in a very poverty-stricken area, and the children do not have access to any form of education at all – many 8-11 year olds have never seen the inside of a classroom. Here, we are focussing on education – the basics, and also life skills to better prepare the children for primary school, which we will help them get into when the time arises.

Halfway house

Approximately six thousand children are orphaned in South Africa every day. It is the vision of YSA to establish a halfway house for boys as well as for girls as a ‘stepping stone’ to serve as a brighter future for them (not a permanent home depending on the needs of the individual). This institution will be used to provide a place of safety for when the individual wants to make a positive change, to provide inner healing and preparing them for development programs. This is a long-term goal and we really hope for this to become a reality in the coming year.

After care

We officially opened our Aftercare Programme in Salt River. Thanks to the generosity and help of a wonderful volunteer Erika, who assisted us in making this possible for the children. Thank you so very much, we now have the tools to assist the children with homework and after school activities!

Women’s Skills Training Programme

Youth Solutions Africa have just started a partnership with Ballo, where the women from the shelter and the soup kitchen are busy knitting beanies – this has just started, and is going wonderfully! We are very blessed to be able to Empower our Women
