Organization Description
Vrygrond Youth Sports Development has been in existence since 2007, born from the Super Lucky Star Football Club. We are situated in the Southern Suburbs some 20 kilometers outside Cape Town. Vrygrond is a deprived community of approximately 40,000 people near Lavender Hill, Cape Town. It is a classic mixed South African community, consisting of half Xhosa speakers and half “Coloured” Afrikaans speakers. It is on of the oldest informal settlements in the Western Cape Province. Vrygrond exhibits all the characteristics of a severely deprived community in which poverty and lack of education go hand in hand with over 50% unemployment, and all the attendant social ills (alcoholism, drug abuse and high incidence of HIV-AIDS). Our aim is to use sports as a tool to empower youth and create opportunities for all.
