Organization Description
Ungweru was originally established as a community-based organization in 2004. The work with the communities quickly grew, and in order to keep up, Ungweru registered as a local grassroots non-governmental organization in January 2009.

Over the years, the growth of the non-denominational organization has been largely due to the support provided by Misean Cara, an international organization that aims to provide support to missionary organizations. Our roots in missionary work bring about our belief that faith, spirituality and development not only complement each other but further enrich one another.

Ungweru is the Chitumbuka word for light. Considering our roots in missionary work, which is about bringing light to communities in need of assistance, this name strongly reflects our values and what we hope to bring to surrounding communities. We aim to serve our communities in a sustainable manner by providing training and financial support and engaging communities in participatory monitoring and evaluation. It is our goal to improve community growth within our seven program sectors-

- Improve access to Education
- Reduce the Impact of HIV/AIDS
- Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation
- Improve Access to Clean Water & Good Sanitary Conditions
- Promote Youth Development
- Promote and Advocate for Human Rights
- Promote Food Security

We also offer, at an extra cost, packages to South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. With plenty of animals, both predator and prey, it is definitely worth a visit.

Ungweru Organisation Average Ratings
I volunteered with Ungweru for 3 weeks and stayed at their hostel. Everyone I met during my time in Malawi was really welcoming. As for the accommodation, I always felt very comfortable during my stay. The bedroom, bathroom and kitchen were very clean, plus the office and hostel are in a really good location near town. With Ungweru, I was able to go out to the field with staff members to overlook the different projects they are working on. I helped them create a data collection tool to measure the progress and success of one of their projects. I also provided training on how to maintain social media accounts, and wrote a small grant proposal for a tree nursery project. The organization also has a computing school where I assisted as a teacher in the afternoons. Also, on weekends...
