Organization Description
What is our goal in the long run?

We want to make an impact – a lasting one. Empowering Ethiopian women through education doesn’t only help those individuals but the entire society. Higher education as key to economic development and ultimately the escape from poverty – that is what we have dedicated ourselves to. Increasing the skill and knowledge level of women is our ultimate goal in order to enable them to live an independent and self-determined life.

Besides this project goal in Ethiopia, the PROJECT-E team in Europe has its agenda as well: Empowering others to empower ourselves. We are all students and young professionals working voluntarily in our free time for this goal – we all share great responsibility in young years which allows us to develop our skills in leadership, project management and determination. Hopefully, we can continue motivate young people from all kinds of background to get involved – there is no better way of challenging yourself and investing in your personal development.

PROJECT-E Hospitality Institute – a qualitative approach for the hotel sector of Ethiopia.

As the political and cultural capital of Africa, Addis Ababa’s importance started growing in the past few years. This has a positive impact on tourism and hotels, too. Each day, visitors from all over the world travel to Addis Ababa in order to assist political conferences, to see the UNESCO sites with their own eyes, or to discover the origin of human mankind. For hotel owners this brings a big potential but also a huge challenge. The culture in which the hotel employees grew up, contrasts with the culture you will find in international hotels. Eating with the hands, not looking in each other´s eyes as a sign of respect, or three people sleeping in one bed is what ordinary Ethiopians are used to. But the hotels have their own rules and customs and the local hotel employees need to adapt and internalize those.

The goal of the Hospitality Institute of PROJECT-E is to provide a promising formation for girls from humble backgrounds and without any professional perspectives. The program takes two years and is based on the Ethiopian Occupational Standard. After graduation, the students do not only obtain the so called "Certificate for Hotel Operation Level 2". During the two years, we work closely with the girls and support them also in a financial and personal way. In collocations, they learn how to be independent, to live with other people and to lead a self-reliant life. Through the weekly English lessons, they widen their vocabulary and their grammar knowledge, but also their self-esteem. They learn how to give a presentation in front of a group, to present themselves self-confidently to new people and to conduct fluent conversations with hotel guests. Through the regular general knowledge courses, the students get informed about specific topics such as HIV, family planning and gender rights. Thanks to this combination of basic courses in the hotel field but also in social skills, the girls get the possibility to develop their potential and to become competitive employees, who can take tourism in Ethiopia further.

So what makes us special?

We are:

• Young

PROJECT-E only exists with the help of young volunteers and students: They all work in web-based online meetings from their home towns in whole Europe. They don´t spend money on a European headquarter or an expensive European infrastructure. The members meet biannually for the strategy weekend to discuss current challenges, strategies and tasks.

• Women-focused

PROJECT-E was founded with the idea of improving the career prospects of women in Ethiopia. Woman from deprived family background seldom get the chance for a self-determined and financially independent life. Women require further support for a chance to determine their lives independently. PROJECT-E supports women from socially disadvantaged backgrounds and orphans in the development of their personality and their competence.

• Education- dedicated

PROJECT-E is based on the idea of improving career prospects of young women in Ethiopia by providing higher education. In the Ethiopian society women are not necessarily eligible or even encouraged to strive for higher education. PROJECT-E empowers education for those women to help them to overcome the viscous circle of poverty and enables them to contribute to their own living.

• Sustainable

Development can only be sustainable when it becomes part of the local community. All of the staff employed at the college is Ethiopian. In order to ensure a sustainable project management that is locally rooted, we have successfully handed over our AOSTD College to a local partner organisation.

• Market-oriented

PROJECT-E ‘s initiatives are based on the demand of well-trained young professionals on the job market in Addis Ababa. Not only theoretic knowledge, but also hands-on training, due to several curriculum-integrated internships, provides the students the highly sought overall package of skills.

• Experienced

PROJECT-E has successfully founded the AOSTD College for secretaries in 2009 and the Hospitality Institute in 2015. Despite the immense unemployment rate in Ethiopia, all graduates have been able to find a job.

• Cost-effective

PROJECT-E is as cost-effective as possible: There are neither overhead costs nor expenditures for infrastructure like office rental in Europe, because we all work voluntarily and from our respective places of residence. So we have minimal administrative costs in Europe that are spend on marketing collateral. All donations are transferred directly to the project and benefit the students as well as the local staff in Ethiopia.

• Life-Skills-committed

PROJECT-E promotes life skills and self-confidence. The education program goes beyond the required curriculum: The two-year vocational training focuses on practical experiences, communications and language skills to prepare the students at their best for the contact with international guests. PROJECT-E brings extra-curricular activities to the students’ daily life and strengthens their personal development.
