Organization Description
FairServices is a non profit organization that was founded on the 16th of September, 2006 in Cusco, Peru. The overall mission of our organization is to break the circle of poverty in which 24% of the population of Cusco lives. We focus on 3 pillars: education, nutrition and health and believe in a total approach, in width and in depth. Our program starts with children as young as 5 years of age and follows them until they graduate from college or university.

WaaW is our after school project for 30 kids in primary school, ages 5 to 12.
The kids are in government schools until 1.00 p.m. and after join our project for an interactive program, which flows as follows:
Between 1.45 and 2.15 the kids arrive, check in and start doing their homework for school;
Between 2.30 and 3.00 they receive a healthy snack after which the group is divided into 3 groups determined by age;
Between 3.00 and 5.00 the groups rotate between: activities (based on a monthly theme), sports and games outside, and reinforcements (communications and mathematics);
Between 5.00 and 6.00 the kids wash their hands, eat a healthy balanced meal (to supplement their carbs based diets) and then brush their teeth;
Between 6.00 and 6.30 the star of the day reads a story to the group and at 6.30 they head home.

Our volunteers and interns are a central part of WaaW, adding positive encouragement and lots of love and attention. Our kids are usually considered a burden by their mothers, aunts or grandmothers since they have to work all day and are often tired and depressed. Their fathers are not around or unknown. As a volunteer you are a (if not the only) positive role model for the children and the encouragement and positive approach means that children start believing in themselves, that they can start growing towards a responsible and happy adulthood.

Every Wednesday, one group will visit a nearby library to work on their reading skills and language comprehension. For many children this is an unique opportunity to read books, which they don't have at school or at home, and fantasize about their favorite princess, hero or place to be. Every Friday we take the children out of WaaW for "Big brother/Big sister" activities, which are also connected to the monthly themes. This can be a visit to the planetarium, a bakery, the fire station or just a visit to the park where they can do what kids love most, play.

We have a set structure in WaaW with 2 Peruvian staff members; Eliana, the general manager and Gabriela, the volunteer coordinator. There are 2 long term volunteers as coordinators for activities and for sports and on average 4 to 8 mentors: volunteers that work with little groups of children throughout the day.

As soon as you have decided to volunteer with FairServices, Gabriela will schedule a Skype meeting with you to figure out which role will fit you best in WaaW and she will answer all the practical questions you may have. Once you arrive in Cusco we will pick you up from the airport, bring you to our office and go over all details and provide you with the volunteer information pack. Once you feel ready we will take you to your accommodation: our volunteer house or homestay, where we will of course introduce you to the family (homestay) and the other volunteers, students and/or interns.

Grant programs
Ideal for people who want to volunteer with high school, college or university students where FairServices provides a grant program for children and young adults post-WaaW. Once they finish primary school we place them in private high schools, which in Cusco is the only way to get a decent secondary education. We do this in cooperation with the parents and pay 80% of the total cost, with the parents paying the remaining 20%. We also have a study center for the grant students. At this center they have a place where they can study, have access to good computers, fast internet, office equipment and materials. We also provide the same facilities for students that go to university and college. Currently we have 9 high school students, 1 university student and 2 college students in our grant program. Volunteers and interns can choose to work with these students, helping them study, teaching them subjects they struggle with or prepare them for exams etc.

Alternatively, if you would like to do research for a thesis; help us with project management, marketing or office management; or simply do something that you love to do that can also help us, please contact us. Many volunteers work at our office, which is an important role and adds great value to our organization.

Our community
FairServices is not just a volunteer project. We have a place close to the historical center of Cusco with: offices that have modern equipment, fast internet and WiFi; a garden; a kitchen; and a big room for activities and events. All of our students, volunteers and interns participate in our Tuesday evening cooking classes and Friday evening salsa classes, where you not only learn how to prepare typical Peruvian dishes and the art of salsa dancing but also a place where people from all over the world share experiences, plan weekend activities and team up for visits to tourist attractions such as hikes, adventures and fun.

If you have an idea, a dream, a problem or a challenge, our international staff is always ready to help you, raise your spirits when you feel a little homesick or take you to a medic if you feel sick. Want to make a Thanksgiving dinner, celebrate your birthday, watch a movie, or simply need help with research or local contacts? Just ask and we'll make it happen!

Spanish courses
In 2006 we became aware of the challenges single mothers, living in poverty, face. We put a plan together and started training a group of women to become the very best Spanish teachers for foreigners possible. In January 2007 we started teaching and soon after became one of the big Spanish schools in Cusco. Our students pay our teachers directly which means they earn a middle class income while working on average, 5 hours per day leaving them with enough time to take care of their children. In 2013 we split our educational services into two parts: FairAcademy that is made up or our most experienced and passionate teachers; and FairSchool, which is made up of new teachers, which provides them all with a career path and different opportunities. At the end of 2016 we added an online Spanish academy known as YOLA, Your Online Language Academy, which
offers 1 on 1 Spanish classes. Volunteers and interns can learn Spanish at home, ahead of their visit to Latin America and that fit into their daily schedules at their convenience. By having more students it also means we can also train more women to become Spanish teachers.

We work with Peruvian middle class families that are selected very carefully. Staying with a Peruvian family puts you in the middle of culture and customs. It is also a very good opportunity to practice every-day-Spanish and often volunteers and students become life long friends with their homestay families. You can choose for a full homestay, which means that you have a room, a shared bathroom and 3 authentic meals per day or
you can also choose to be more independent and stay at our volunteer house. This house (top floor of a house) has 3 rooms with 2 beds in each, a fully equipped kitchen, a rooftop terrace, a living room, dining room and a bathroom. Meals are not included but we do provide daily cleaning of the apartment.

Doing my internship at the project 'WaaW' from FairServices was amazing. The project felt like my second home, the kids are so kind and the people where you have to work with are so good in their job. It was a pleasure to work theire. Also the parents from the kids are so nice, they are so thankful for everything that you do. For me, it was a great experience!
After researching Fair Services online, the program seemed like it was everything I wanted - working with kids, living in a homestay, and being in an awesome city however the program went above and beyond what I had ever expected. From the time I stepped off the plane (where John picked us up from the airport) until I left 4 weeks later, everyone at Fair Services and WaaW made my friends and I feel overwhelmingly welcome. From hosting weekly dinners to even helping us visit a clinic when we were sick, the people that run and work at Fair Services are genuinely passionate and caring. The program sets you up with a homestay and living with Carmen was great -- she was so welcoming and a fabulous cook! During the week there are activities at Fair Services such as salsa lessons and...
My friend/co-worker and I volunteered at the Waaw School last summer. We spent 4 weeks in Cusco, and could not have asked for a better experience. It was both of our first times volunteering abroad, so before arriving we were a bit nervous. However, once we arrived, we realized how great this program was. Pickup at the airport was very smooth. We then were taken to the language school, where we were given more information and a chance to ask any questions we had. After that, the volunteer coordinator brought us to our homestay and introduced us to Carmen, the woman who would be hosting us. On our first day at the Waaw school, we were picked up at Carmen's home by the volunteer coordinator and she walked us to the school, guiding us there and giving us more information about the...
