Organization Description
Alekii was started in 2009 and is community project registered with the Kenya government through the ministry of Social Services as a community Self Help Group. The organisation is offering Education project to offer basic education to the orphans and vulnerable (needy children) who could not afford the costs of education in other schools and is yet to attain it's fully fledged registered charitable children's institution. Most of the children are orphans who lost their parents due to HIV/AIDs and Malaria, both of which are rampant in the Suba District, where we operate. It is a part of the community development project, working closely with other groups from the community. Alekii hopes to provide education for anyone who wants to learn and help change the world, whether locally or on a larger level.

Alekii Academy is a kindergarten project with incorporated orphan programme and community development visions in Rusinga Island, Kenya. We basically provide early childhood education with a focus on satisfaction of basic needs. We provide shelter, social, and educational care and work on a creation of identity awareness through cultural exchange. We plan in future to deal with water, sanitation, solar, sustainable energy, non formal adult education and for disabled/challenged children, and library, though currently our resources are very small.

We are a Development Group comprises of the youth and the old both male and female who have joined hands together through a participatory approach to realize their own problems while thinking globally and acting locally. Our main motivation is drawn from the desire for engaging different individuals to be united together for their own development other than being dependent upon external parties for solutions. The group supports: Orphans and Vulnerable Children (O.V.Cs) by providing a feeding program and general education (primary education) on contagious issues such as HIV/AIDS, Drug and Substance Abuse, Hygiene. Volunteers normally takes part in farm work that include land preparation, community work, class teaching, sports, and Feeding programme.

Volunteer Programme

Our Volunteer programs are a great opportunity for you to travel to Kenya and experience true Kenyan culture, while also greatly improving the lives of children who desperately need your help. The volunteer programs usually comprise of 10-15 volunteers from a variety of nations and backgrounds who come for a minimum stay of two weeks to1 year. We combined volunteer programme with Eco tour where volunteers have the opportunity to explore our country.

We urgently need volunteers. Any one can volunteer, we need teachers, sports activists, Fundraisers, engineers, photographers, web designers, doctors, students, carpenters, travelers, mothers, fathers, etc. We welcome anyone who is motivated.

Our group is comprised of both men and women, old and young, and we all work together in order to benefit the local children and hopefully ultimately benefit the greater world. Many of the children that we support are orphans and vulnerable children, and we attempt to provide them basic education, food, and any resources that they need in order to survive and prosper. It is a big goal and we need your help in order to achieve it.

At our volunteer programs, volunteers normally engage in a variety of activities including (but not limited to) farming, community work, class teaching, sports playing, feeding the young children, garden preparation, construction work, caring for the donkey, goats, and cows, etc. All work that you do helps our group to continue to be functioning as best as possible in order to help the children. Volunteers work for about 5-6 hours a day during the week, and on the weekends volunteers can take part in excursions in order to learn more about the local area.

Volunteers live in a home stay program while here, closely linked with the school. Volunteers are given a chance to experience a very authentic African lifestyle in all aspects. It is a great chance for you to be a part of a different culture and to learn about how others live their lives.
