Bio:
My name is Whitney-Lea Simpson. I'm from the Sunshine Coast in Australia and have been volunteering and traveling throughout Central America since November of 2015. I am currently volunteering in a children's refuge in Tapachula, Mexico that was founded and is run by an Australian couple that started 15 years ago. I have been taking care of the children, creating activities, helping with studies and having a blast. I am have a bachelor's degree in Spanish Language and Social Entrepreneurship and am very passionate about helping people less fortunate than me create a better life for themselves. Nutrition and exercise have always been a huge part of my life and I love having the opportunity to show others what I love to cook. In Australia, I have mainly been in managerial roles in the food industry, so I have always been around like minded people who share my passion.
Volunteering Experience:
As stated previously, I am currently volunteering in a children's refuge in Mexico for children who come from abusive or neglected backgrounds often with a family history of drug and/or alcohol abuse. These children are now in a safe and loving home in which we value education as the utmost important aspect of life to help break the cycle of poverty. We also value surf and exercise a vital part of daily life and the children are benefiting immensely from every sector within this organisation. From a daily perspective, volunteers are feeding the children, getting them ready for school, playing sports with them, assisting with their homework and helping with other small duties around the house. The changes that you see in such a small time are incredible and each and every volunteer is helping to shape these kids' futures, whether it's on a small scales or grande scale. At the moment, I am working on getting a library system in place for the children in which they check in and out books within their age groups. I have also volunteered at Volunteers Australia, an organisation that link individuals to volunteering opportunities throughout the Northern Territory in Australia. I worked under the regional manager and assisted with a networking meeting that we held with a huge number of non-profit organisations in the Northern Territory. We worked together to come up with an action plan to create better volunteering opportunities and attract more people to such an important aspect of living in the Territory. We were also working on a proposal for the Northern Territory Government to increase their budget for non-profit organisational grants.
