Bio:
I’m a very young & very active 52yr old, native English speaking male who is originally from Scotland in the UK. However in the last 20 years I have been lucky to have travelled to many parts of the world, sometimes for periods in excess of 9 months and since August 2015 I have been living in Göreme, Turkey. My old day job - Since graduating from University I was employed in a marketing role within large multi-national companies before I decided to become a self-employed Marketing Consultant. Making this change enabled me to both work and enjoy my love of travelling. My current sitiuation – At present I have been volunteering at an International Backpackers Hostel since October 2015, dealing with all of the English speaking guests from all over the world and in doing this I have made a countless number of new friends from many different cultures, learning so much in the process. The hostel is called Whisper Cave House and you will find details of this here http://bit.ly/1pXf2YW where you can read the recent guest reviews, many which include comments about me. My “relationship” with these guests starts at the point they confirm a reservation here at Whisper Cave House where I will begin an e-mail conversation to understand what type of people they are and how they would want to spend their time here to ensure their stay will be all they would want it to be. Once the guests arrive I'm their 1st point of contact and I'm very proud to say that before I took up this role at the hostel it had a Booking.com rating of 8.9/10, however this has now increased to 9.3/10 (with an individual staff rating of 9.5/10) In addition to this I also teach English 3 times per week to local children aged 10 - 15, (and constantly during the day to local adults in a more conversational way over a cup of tea or 2). I do this on a 100% volunteer basis and my classes were as a result of having discussions with many of the local adults and discovering there was no outlet for their children to learn English locally. I produce all of the lesson plans and learning materials for these classes myself. As a result of this "project" I soon realised just how much I enjoyed helping the children develop an understanding of English and how these introductory classes could & should benefit them in later life. Due to my new-found love of teaching I enrolled in a 120hr online TEFL Course (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) with the highly acclaimed The Telf Academy https://www.theteflacademy.com I’m scheduled to complete this course and “graduate” by November 2016 and shortly after that my current Turkish residency permit will expire and with that in mind I decided (after much soul-searching) that this would be a good time for me to move on and experience a different culture whilst putting my skills (old & new) to good use for the benefit of others.
Volunteering Experience:
Several short-term (1 - 4 weeks) volunteer positions during my travelling icluding farm stays, charity projects, archaeology sites & renovation projects. Volunteering at an International Backpackers Hostel - 1 year Volunteer English Teacher - 6 months What's next for me? I would love the opportunity to be part of a community project where I can immerse myself totally in the culture whilst continuing to teach English, but also use my other skills to the benefit of the local people. I firmly believe that good education (of any description in any topic) ultimately benefits from a level of stability & continuity, therefore I am willing to commit to the right opportunity for a period of at least 6 months or even longer if possible.
