Bio:
Hello! My name is Stephanie, I am an American and I currently live in Vietnam. I studied social work, public health, and women's studies in college, and I work as an English teacher in Ho Chi Minh City. After I leave Vietnam I plan to visit my friends in South Africa, but would possibly like to join a Volunteer Alliance program on my way. I love volunteering, I thrive on fulfilling work, and I appreciate that Volunteer Alliance makes these kind of opportunities affordable to people living on a budget. I am excited to explore this site more, and see where my skills could be a good fit!
Volunteering Experience:
In the past, I have volunteered with: Casa de la Cruz (helped build a home in Anapra, Mexico) Hour Mother's House (provided child care for incarcerated mothers) Chatsworth Hospice (provided social services and basic care assistance to hospice patients on the ward) Children's Mercy Hospital (led crafts activities for children in hospital waiting rooms) St. Louis County Domestic Violence Court (called women who had filed restraining orders to follow up and ensure their safety) Villages of Jackson Creek (visited residents at a nursing home, organized fun activities) St. James Soup Kitchen (served hot meals) Ideally, I would like to work with a women's empowerment group. I am very passionate about issues affecting women, and I have a lot of volunteer and educational experience with these issues. I am very enthusiastic and athletic, so I would also be happy helping out with a sports league or related program. I could also work in a health setting, although I admit I'm very queasy with blood so I wouldn't want to assist with anything directly medical. I'd be best matched with a position in preventative health, caregiving, or social service. I am a teacher, so I could also help out with education or youth programs.
Education:
4-year bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis
Occupation:
English teacher
Other Skills:
LGBT issues, qualitative research, athletics, teaching, advocacy for labor and racial justice issues
