Bio:
My name is Sarah Cook. I am a rising sophomore at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. I am currently doing research in a cancer virology lab at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. I have always found my passion in biology and sought to be a biomedical researcher. Outside of academics, I am a runner, a writer, and a dancer. I love animals and being outside.
Volunteering Experience:
From a young age, I have been involved in community service and volunteering. My friends and I founded a group called the Beautiful Beaders; we hand-make jewelry and sell it, with all proceeds benefiting the Make A Wish Foundation. Over the years, we have raised close to $20,000. However, I have recently been inspired to take myself away from the privileged world that I've grown so accustomed to and provide help where it is needed most. My inspiration came from the book Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, a biography of an incredible doctor and human who dedicated his life to Haiti; it made me realize that I have the capacity to help. I would be happiest volunteering in a place such as Haiti, where the need for health care is desperate. I know that as an undergraduate, I am not qualified to provide care, but I would love to find myself volunteering in a hospital where I can help with anything that needs to be done. I think this type of experience would open my eyes to so much of the world, and it is a place where my knowledge could be useful.
