Bio:
I am a retired trained nurse who worked in the National Health Service for thirty years. I have three adult daughters, three grandsons and a Dutch husband.
Volunteering Experience:
I have very good contact with the Gunjur Project in the Gambia. They were set up ten years ago and I have visited three times - 2010, 2011 and 2012. I have been unable to go recently due to the serious illness of my husband but hope to return very soon. We supported a local school, Kassa Kunda, which is in a fairly remote area, by raising funds in the UK and sending a part container of goods (32 boxes) to the Gunjur Project. They collected and then stored the boxes until we arrived in The Gambia. Without their support this would not have been possible. After our arrival we were able help the school by: - Having the nursery painted - Adding decoration to the walls - Buying toys and educational materials for Nursery and whole school - Buying 1st Year course books for pupils - Buying course books for the 1st Year teachers - Buying educational materials for 1st Year class. - Giving funds to complete a building for school lunches - Commissioning a local carpenter to build cupboards for each classroom - Using donations from supporters to supply AFNOW with a camera for their work and for Microloans Gunjur Project also uses donations from supporters to send many children to school. My husband and I , together with a brother in law and sister, intend to continue this support via the Gunjur Project. This was set up by a family from Cheshire and without them it would not have been possible to do what we have. They have the local knowledge and contacts to ensure help goes where it is most needed.
Education:
RGN, MA.
Occupation:
Retired general nurse
Other Skills:
My organisational skills will allow me to continue to raise funds in the UK for Gunjur Project.
