Bio:
Hello, my name is Mayra Rios. I am an optimistic, reliable and hard working person. I was born and raised in Queretaro, Mexico. I moved to Houston Texas at the age of 13 where I received my high school education. Having come from a disadvantaged background, I had difficulties enrolling into college after graduating high school. However, years later I finally enrolled in college as a biochemistry major, I currently attend University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). I will be graduating June 2016 with a bachelors in science in biochemistry. I am extremely proud and happy that I made the choice to work for a college education. I have gained confidence in myself, I consider myself a well rounded person. I was born with a sense of wonder and skepticism, I always question the "why" of things. That is what let me to the biochemistry major, I wanted to know why we believe the theory we find in science books.. Choosing that path in my life has given opportunities such as paid research internships at top universities around the United States such as Brown University and Stanford University. I look forward to graduation, and hopefully landing a good job, preferably I would like to work in a water treatment facility since it is doing public health work and is a government job which should provide good benefits. The reason why I am looking into possible volunteer opportunities in other countries around the world is because I love learning about different cultures, seeing new places and meeting different people. I think that is a priceless experience that not many people are lucky enough to experience. Also, I love lending a helping hand to make this a better world, and why not doing two things at the same time in the most affordable-way possible. I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to travel the world... that has become one of my priorities.
Volunteering Experience:
-I volunteered at Stanford Hospital for one year 2009-2010 -I volunteered to serve food at homeless shelters -I volunteer to found a school club called Bridging HIspanic Minds to Success in 2011 with the aim to inspire english as a second language (ESL) students to pursue higher education. I was responsible for coordinating the club where we would do fund raisers to give scholarships to ESL students who choose to pursue a higher degree. We gave out two $500.00 scholarships to two different students -2012 I volunteered at the SACNAS conference to do science experiments with high school students
