Bio:
My name is Maria Jose Tamayo and I am 19 years old. I was born and raised in Lima, Peru. My family is composed by my parents and my two siblings. My both parents are engineers, my older brother is an economist who is currently a social entrepreneur and my younger sister is still at school. I have been always related to social work, as in Peru there is many people in need and I have always felt a need to give them a hand. I consider myself a team leader, creative, fun and open-minded. I have attended two schools: a German school "Reina del Mundo Schule" and a British school "Markham College". Currently, I am studying business administration in Universidad del Pacífico, a prestigious business school in Lima. My hobbies are photography, tennis, cooking, Stand-up Comedy, playing musical instruments and I love to travel. I also have a business with my best friend in which I sell hair accesories made by a peruvian craftwoman I know since I was little.
Volunteering Experience:
During my whole life I have been part of many social projects in Peru. One of them was the house building project in Chincha - Ica after the 2007 Earthquake. For several years I have attended to communities and built houses for them. Simultaneously in 2013, I started my own microfinance project by which we reached women that needed to support their families and helped them start their own businesses by providing help on getting a microcredit and creating a business. Other projects where I have been involved are the building of a day care in Santa Eulalia, Lima; planting trees and teaching children the importance of maintaining a green environment in schools in Santa Eulalia- Lima and Huaraz - Ancash. Nowadays I volunteer at Yaqua, a peruvian social enterprise that sells water and provides the 100 percent utilities to water projects in Peru, where 8 million people don´t have clean water yet. Also I am part of the Lima Microfinance Initiative where we provide empower people with knowledge about managing a business and getting a microcredit to start it. We have worked with several NGOs and it keeps growing.
