Bio:
I have studied Spanish for quite a few years while growing up. I am not a native speaker of Spanish but through many years of schooling I have achieved a working level of proficiency. I graduated in 2015 from East Carolina University and ended up going back for my masters, which I am currently working on. I have volunteered, both through the university and on my own, with a few different organizations to help Hispanics in the city of Greenville, North Carolina and its surrounding areas. As I complete my masters I hope to focus all my attention on bridging the gap between the United States and the world by continuously helping those in need around the globe.
Volunteering Experience:
I have volunteered a few seasons with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Volunteers were broken up into pairs and sent out to various farms across Pitt County to work with migrant farmhands. While teaching English was the primary focus, we also taught important lessons like worker's rights and abilities while in the United States. I have also worked with a local non-profit organization known as the Association of Mexicans in North Carolina (AMEXCAN). While volunteering for AMEXCAN, my focus was on community outreach. Contacting large communities of Hispanics and connecting them with the valuable resources offered by the organization. These resources covered everything from legal help to education. While at East Carolina University, I am working under Dr. Lester Zeager as a research assistant. Together we are diving into the Syrian refugee crisis that is currently growing every day.
