Bio:
My name is Lauren Thatcher and I am currently a nineteen-year-old sophomore at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa pursuing a major in Child, Adult, Family Services with a minor in Food & Society with a strong desire to work with children and families for a long term specifically through Christian missionary work in order to spread the gospel and bring hope. I plan to pursue as many careers and opportunities as I can prior to fulfilling a full-time job relating to working with children and families whether that is in America or overseas on missions. I absolutely love traveling, eating frozen yogurt, reading Harry Potter and talking about Jesus.
Volunteering Experience:
My aunt and uncle who have lived in Nairobi, Kenya for the past twenty years as missionaries through their own missionary organization, Coates Ministry, have developed and enhanced my passion and drive to become a missionary myself. My family and I have been to visit them twice, once when I was quite young and another time when I was a senior in high school. The two and a half week trip to Kenya my senior year of high school was a major impact on my dreams through being able to share the gospel with those who have never heard it and gaining full experiences in third world countries. My heart ached and was moved by the Holy Spirit for those who are less fortunate and in need of the hope of the Gospel over those short yet immensely impactful weeks. All through-out my life before coming to college, my hometown church allowed everyone to be highly active within the community and also around Iowa through joining in on feeding the homeless, packing food that will be sent to countries that are less fortunate, and attending a variety of different summer church camps and retreats. I entered my first year of college pursuing a dietetics major with the dream of helping those who desperately need to enhance their health. It wasn’t long before I changed it to public health with the new dream of helping third world countries enhance their health and take part in a global restoration of providing food and sanitation to the areas in need. Over the course of the summer after my first year of college, I worked at a daycare and felt that God was calling me to pursue a future that involved helping children and families whether through foster or adoption care but definitely incorporating the Gospel and the hopes and promises that Christ brings. I also was a youth group leader over the course of the same summer, providing me with more experience on mentoring and sharing the Gospel with the youth. I found an immense amount of joy with having this opportunity to lead others closer to Christ and being someone that God uses to make disciples. I had the opportunity to go to El Salvador during this past summer through FIAT (Faith In Action Together) Organization where I took part in helping build homes for abused and single mothers, provide materials such as clothing and supplies to children and families, provide information on healthy lifestyles, and spend time with the children by playing games and activities. This eight day trip immensely opened my eyes even more to how people all across the globe are in need of a Savior and strengthened my passion to pursue a career as a missionary. I am currently seeking more volunteer experience that involves the opportunity to help those who are less fortunate and are hopeless in order to give them the supplies, love and hope they are missing.
