Bio:
I was born in Virginia, and raised on Topsail Island, North Carolina. After graduating high school I joined Volunteers for Peace and traveled to Chiapas, Mexico. I lived and worked there for 6 months, and returned to North Carolina to begin my post-secondary education. I enrolled in school full-time and also began working for a property management company specializing in vacation rentals in my hometown of Topsail Island. After working for the company for 3 years, I met my current partner. He works as a private contractor for the U.S. State Department, traveling internationally to complete embassy renovations and security upgrades. In October 2014, I left North Carolina and began traveling with him while continuing my education online. So far, we have lived in Majuro, Marshall Islands and Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. We are currently back living in Majuro, and will be here for another 1-2 months. My partner's next job assignment is in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Rather than traveling with him for this next project, I have decided to look for alternate opportunities abroad where I could volunteer with an organization full-time 5-6 days per week, while still having access to the internet for my studies. My passion is traveling and experiencing new cultures, and I find volunteering to be the ideal way to immerse oneself while being able to contribute to an important cause. I also like to spend time outdoors, so I would enjoy any projects involving gardening or construction, or having access to hiking or running trails during free time. With my work in property management, I have experience in marketing and administrative work and am currently pursuing my B.S. in Business Management from Penn State World Campus. Any volunteer position which involved this scope of work would also be ideal, as it is something I have experience in and enjoy doing. Ultimately, I am open to any project opportunities, simply looking to get involved with a cause where I can contribute my time and efforts while learning something new!
Volunteering Experience:
In 2009, I decided to forego attending college immediately to join a volunteer organization instead. I submitted an application to Volunteers for Peace for a work camp in Chiapas, Mexico, and I began work in San Cristobal in August, 2009. After completing a cultural and language immersion program in the city, I traveled to the small town of Tzajal’ja to begin the international work camp. I lived in Ha Oh Mek Ka, a self-sustaining community that practiced permaculture. Among the day-to-day activities of gardening, lombriculture and maintaining the grounds, we also constructed a roadside store for local women from the ground up. We taught them how to make various goods including artisanal jewelry, woven handicrafts and hammocks, recycled paper products, marmalades, and baked goods. Our goal was to provide them with the means and education so they could acquire the necessary skills to provide for themselves and contribute to the local economy. Once I returned to North Carolina in February 2010, I began volunteering with the Topsail Humane Society. Working at the local animal shelter involved weekend assistance caring for the rescued animals including training, walking, and administering medications. After moving from North Carolina to the Marshall Islands in October 2014, I had the opportunity to volunteer at Majuro Cooperative School, where I assisted the U.S. Ambassador's wife in initiating a library program. Duties included administrative work and organizing events with the children, including a Scholastic Book Fair. We were able to provide all the children with new books through donations, wrapping and distributing them during the Christmas holidays. Whether working with animals or children, in manual labor or administrative projects, I feel that I have the necessary experience and passions to contribute to a wide-variety of causes. I am open to new experiences as well, and looking forward to involving myself in volunteer work once again.
