Bio:
I am an eighteen year old originally from Denton, NE. I went to school in Crete, NE which is a large factory town which actually means I was the minority throughout my education. I loved the experience of being surrounded by so much diversity and learned a lot about cultures, but I also saw several injustices that they faced on a daily basis. I am going to school with the hopes of joining the Navy and being involved with refugee law, and I think that having the experience of volunteering abroad would definitely aid in achieving this.
Volunteering Experience:
I currently volunteer at a nonprofit public interest law firm, Nebraska Appleseed, in Lincoln, NE. I have been here for nearly a year and work in the immigration and communities sector. Through this organization I have become a certified voting registrar and gone to several fairs and events to stress the importance of voting and voters rights. I have also attended several trainings to become informed and to teach of the rights of immigrants in the state. I am also in charge of researching proposed bills so we can start organizing grassroots movements to affect legislation and inform the public. Other than Nebraska Appleseed, I volunteered all of high school with the local 4h County Extension office to teach after school programs and summer school at the local Middle and Elementary schools. I have also spent time throughout college volunteering for the Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach Program and for Safequarters -- a Friendship home and safe house for women and children.
