Bio:
My name is Emma Gates and I'm 20 years old. I had a unique childhood growing up on a school camp which my Dad managed, located an hour from Melbourne. Half my time was spent there and the other half on a farm nearby horse riding and helping in the paddocks. I went to high school in Melbourne and this year I completed my first year at Melbourne University studying a bachelor of science and living on residence at Queen's College. On my gap year last year I was lucky enough to work as an assistant teacher in England and travel parts of Europe. I'm an outgoing and confident person who loves travel and the outdoors. I have always loved sport but have recently discovered a passion for yoga and meditation which was strengthened by a trip to Ubud, Bali last year.
Volunteering Experience:
Since I was 15 years old I have volunteered as a surf lifesaver at Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club on the Great Ocean Road. This role has taught me a lot about working as a team and taking responsibility for others. As part of completing my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award I volunteered at an afterschool care centre. This role included playing with primary school age kids and assisting them with creative homework tasks This year I accompanied a year 9 girl with cerebral palsy on a school trip to Sri Lanka for 2 weeks. We volunteered in a rural school, teaching English, building a school gate and most importantly playing cricket with the kids- they loved their sport
Education:
Victorian Certificate of Education (Year 12 completed) and first year University
Occupation:
Student
