Bio:
I am a social worker currently specialising in the field of learning disability and community care. I am taking a career break from my current post, working for a Scottish Local authority, for 14 months and from November 2016 and am looking for volunteer opportunities to share skills, meet new people, embrace other cultures and make a positive contribution to the world. My primary degree is in English Language and I have some experience of teaching conversational English, although mostly informally. I love children and have lots of experience in developing and facilitating arts and crafts programmes and other types of structured play activities. I also have a background in performing arts and have some experience in facilitating music groups and workshops with young people with intellectual disabilities. I have a lot of interest in disability rights, women's rights and community development and would love to be able to share some of my skills and experience from social work as well as to learn from the individuals and communities I will work with. I am also fairly handy (some basic carpentry skills from high school) and welcome a challenge. I am very interested in trying new things and developing new skills and have a very open mind. I am very friendly and easy going and have a good sense of humour, which I feel is very important. If you would like to know any more about me, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you, and hopefully working alongside you soon!
Volunteering Experience:
Student Volunteers Abroad (June- September 2007) Sri Lanka Project; Working in a children's home for girls with learning and physical disabilities, developing and facilitating arts and crafts, music and dance workshops. Volunteering 2 x evenings per week teaching English in Kalutara Tsunami Camp school. Independent Volunteer (May - September 2009); Sukitha Children's Home, Galpatha, Sri Lanka. Working directly with children and young people with intellectual and physical disabilities, delivering arts and crafts, music and dance workshops as well as group activities and day trips. Working with support staff and the young people in Sukitha to develop personalised support plans for the children based on their abilities, interests and their goals for the future.
