Bio:
My name is Emily Schaeffler. I am 19 years old. I'm originally from St. Louis, Missouri. I am currently studying History and French at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri I plan on continuing my education to get my Master's degree in Education and I hope to one day become a teacher. Here at school I'm in the sorority Sigma Kappa and I'm also involved with Campus Pals, an organization that allows local children from the Kirksville area to be paired up with a college student and serve as their mentor and friend. Despite being away at school, I still love my hometown of St. Louis dearly. I am huge fan of the baseball team, the St. Louis Cardinals and I have worked for the St. Cardinals for four years now as an usher. I love spending time with friends and family, my friends here at school and those from home. I am a huge animal lover and I have two dogs at home. In spare time, I love swimming, hiking, and reading. I also love travelling and serving others. I have worked with many different charity organizations and I love being involved in many causes. My goals for the future is to work in the Peace Corps after graduating college and I also want to hike the Appalachian Trail, stretching from Georgia to Maine.
Volunteering Experience:
I have worked with many different charity organizations such as: Amigos for Christ: I spent a week in Nicaragua digging ditches for water pipes to placed in the village of La Grecia to bring the residents clean drinking water. Catholic Charities: I have travelled to West Virginia twice for a week each trip to repair homes that had been damaged by weather St. Norbert Preschool: I spent two weeks working for preschool and assisting the teachers and playing with the kids Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition: I spent a summer working in the organization's second hand clothing store that provides clothes for children in foster care Marygrove: I spent time with kids placed in foster care by doing crafts and art projects Manor Care: I spend time with someone who is in the nursing home Campus Pals: I spend time with a young girl and serves as a mentor. It's very similar to a "big sister, little sister" program. My hopes for applying for the Volunteer Alliance is that I can find somewhere to spend my summer doing something meaningful and making a difference in the lives of other people. I also want to get out of my comfort zone and be immersed in a different culture.
