Bio:
My name is Daryien Lee Bennie and I will be 19 in a few weeks. I have been so blessed to have parents and a life that has never left me wanting for anything. I was however diagnosed with arthritis at the age of 5 and fibromyalgia at the age of 18. The effort and the money my parents have invested in keeping me healthy has made me think of all the people in the world, especially children who do not have this luxury. It is my time to give back in any way I can. I am currently studying advanced mining engineering but my key goal with this study is to provide proper sanitation in the mines and rural areas. I am currently working on a waterless toilet system. As a gift for my 19th birthday, I have asked my parents if they could please buy me a plane ticket for somewhere in Africa where I can make the slightest difference in someone else’s life. I am an only child and I honestly believe that I can be a big sister to many. I truly hope you can afford me this opportunity. I have patience and a naturally soft disposition that works well with the elderly and children
Volunteering Experience:
Over the last 5 years, I have volunteered at the Catholic Church for the homeless in Braamfontein. I am a part of their feeding scheme on weekends. The church gives me one meal a day. I have arranged for 2 special days a year for the homeless where they get a second meal and a care package. This is over Easter and Christmas. I volunteer at the Old age home in our area. Whenever I have an afternoon off, I go by and read with the elders. I try and take them snacks once a week and spend time have tea and biscuits with them. I have a once a week walking initiative with them. For those that can walk, we do a 30 min slow walk around the area as a form of exercise as well as an opportunity for them to get out a bit. I volunteer at the Douglasdale Police Station on holidays. I assist with admin work and I help with the teen drug counselling programme. My most extensive experience is with a weekend school in the township for juniors. I teach basic reading and writing to toddlers and help the slightly older children with their homework. I also work closely with the tutors of the Dimension Data weekend school that helps students excel in Maths and science.
