Bio:
No matter how big, or small, I'm passionate about making a difference in people's lives. I currently work as a medical assistant at Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. I love my job. I will be applying to nursing school in the fall. I have two dogs who I adore. I am adaptable, compassionate, empathetic, and low maintenance. I practice yoga everyday because it provides the grounding and balance I need in my life. I am constantly thinking,"how can WE make this world a more loving, accepting, and non-judgmental place?" I guess it comes down to love, and that's essentially why I want to volunteer. I want to show as many human beings as I can,(regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual identity) that they matter, deserve love, and are loved. I want to BE the difference, and not just talk about it.
Volunteering Experience:
I have volunteered twice out of the country and both times in Kenya, Africa. Once in 2004 and again in 2007. I previously worked at an HIV/AIDS clinic for six years, and I had the opportunity to travel with one of the physicians who would go several times annually to rural areas in Kenya. We would set up tents for HIV testing, and arrange the churches and schools into a clinic setting. We did a lot of work with women and orphans. Women who were HIV positive were empowered through shops they were running, such as selling jewelry. We brought more HIV medications to the clinics. We were able to spend time with the children who were orphaned by a parent with HIV, and go to school with them and help with homework. We passed out mosquito nets to families. The goal of each of the trips, was to see as many as patients as possible. Some people would walk for hours to be seen by a doctor, and most had never seen a doctor in their lifetime. I stayed roughly three weeks each time I went. Sometimes, we would travel eight hours to the next destination and set up the next clinic. These trips and experiences have changed my life. I'm seeking to work with children, women, or doing some sort of medical care
