Bio:
I am a recent graduate Dietitian who is extremely passionate about public health, helping disadvantaged groups and spending time abroad. I am a highly motivated, kind and capable individual who is hoping to bring my passions together and challenge myself through obtaining a short term volunteer role with an organisation abroad that aligns with my values and vision to help people achieve a state of improved health and well-being. Whilst also providing me with the opportunity to develop my personal skills, knowledge and to build on my experiences from my university placements and volunteer positions.
Volunteering Experience:
All current volunteer work has been within Australia Diabetes Camps Victoria • Volunteered on two occasions, attending a 3 day and a 5 day camp with four to eleven year olds who all have type one diabetes. • Provide support for the health professionals working on this camp • Help to check blood glucose and ketone levels • Supervise and assist in hypo management Volunteer Meals Assistance Program (VMAP) • I committed to six months of volunteer work with the Western Hospital, with their Volunteer Meals Assistance Program (VMAP). • My duties involve doing as little as setting up meals for patients and opening containers, to encouraging good eating habits while offering social support, to physically feeding persons who do not have the strength or ability to feed themselves. 22nd World Diabetes Congress • Attended and volunteered at the 22nd World Diabetes Congress in Melbourne in 2013 • My roles included ushering, working at the sign in stands and being a point of information to attendees. • Attend the congress itself, viewing a range of posters on a number of topics such diet quality and type 2 diabetes risk, as well as talks on gestational diabetes and type two diabetes in young Australians. Run Melbourne2015 • I volunteered my time to Run Melbourne which raised almost $2million for Diabetes Australia • I volunteered for 6 hours, handing drinks to the runner and was also involved in the clean up after the races were completed. • I was able to demonstrate leadership skills in this role as when I arrived our instructor was not there, and was still not there after almost 20 minutes, so I organised the individuals at my site as I knew it was imperative to be organised for the race goers.
Education:
Master of Dietetics, bachelor of food science and Nutrition
