Bio:
Hi! I'm Andrea, a medical student in the U.S. Over the past several years, I've sought out opportunities to travel and experience cultures different from my own. In college, I studied abroad in Italy and in Costa Rica to study Italian and Latin American culture and language. I've returned to Costa Rica and Panama twice since then to travel (backpack) around the country. I really enjoy becoming immersed in a new environment and to getting to know the people and communities when I travel. I feel that this helps to broaden my perspectives as a person, and will also help me relate to my patients in the future.
Volunteering Experience:
I have volunteered extensively within the U.S., with physical labor (cleaning, yard work, etc.), health care (health fairs, National Ski Patrol, etc.), and community events. I'd volunteered briefly with a physician in Costa Rica when I was there a couple of years ago, but otherwise have minimal experience with international volunteering. I've tried to seek out international volunteering in the past, but as a student who normally travels on a minuscule budget, I have not been able to afford the expensive volunteer programs I've come across in my research. I recently travelled on leisure to the Dominican Republic, and really fell in love with the country and was touched by the kindness of the people. I felt a pull to return and really become immersed in the culture and with the people. I feel that the best way to do that is by living and working or volunteering in the community. I was very excited to come across Volunteer Alliance and the opportunity to return and give back to the wonderful country. I am not sure yet when I will be available to travel/volunteer, but wanted to get the ball rolling now to hopefully get something in place in the near future. My husband, an engineer, would also volunteer with me, and is a very good skilled laborer (building, electric, etc.) I speak conversational Spanish - not great but enough to get around, and always take time to practice and improve before any international travel.
