Bio:
Hello, my name is Agnieszka Kupilas and I am an 18 year old living in North Wales. I moved here with my family just over a year ago. I never went to school here and I never had the opportunity to meet new people and make friends. Since recovering from clinical depression and chronic insomnia, which resulted in me dropping out of school, I refuse to sit back and do nothing for the next couple of months before going off to college again in September. I really want to make a difference and not only to other peoples lives but to my own- I want to become a more well rounded person and this opportunity will really help me. Ever since volunteering with NCS, I knew that this was something I would love to do. I am a hard working person who can be a strong leader but also a team worker. I know that I have a lot to offer and can really make a difference in contributing to local communities.
Volunteering Experience:
I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the National Citizen Service scheme. This consisted of three phases: Phase 1- Away residential. Here I went to Oaklands in North Wales and was placed in a group of 15 people who I had never met before. The activities we did pushed us to work as a team regardless of the fact that no one knew each other. Through this I became a more confident person and developed my team work skills as during different activities, different people were put in charge and I had to be a strong team leader in order to complete the task to the best ability Phase 2- Workshops. During phase 2, we gained different qualifications such as first aid and food safety. During this time we also went to our local dairy farm and where we were given a tour and were educated about how the dairy process works. I found it fascinating as often we don't acknowledge how much work goes behind such simple things, we don't usually question where we get our milk from. Phase 3- Social Action. The aim of NCS is to help the community in any way we as a team choose. For our social action project, we decided to bridge the gap between mainstream schools and additional needs schools. We did this because in our group, we had two autistic people and throughout the whole scheme, we found that we had so many similarities that we wanted to abolish the stereotype that is held against them and make them feel like a bigger part in society. We organised a day at our local leisure centre where people with different additional needs alongside our NCS team took part in different games. We also organised a Christmas art competition which we all thoroughly enjoyed.
