Description

PHILISA ABAFAZI BETHU, name is deriving from one of our 9 languages of South Africa which means HEAL OUR WOMEN. Founder member and Director Lucinda Evans saw this great need for a women’s development program to be started up in the greater Lavender Hill community which is 30 km from the Cape Town city centre on the Cape Flats. This community has a population of over 40 000 people which more than 60% of this population is unemployed. Most of the population is women and also more than 50% of the women are unemployed but also single mothers. This community has history of violence, and crime presently has the high rate of gender violence, high family violence, high child abuse rate, and also high HIV infection rate. The crime rates have also soared because of high drug consumption of Chrystal meth, house brake in has escalated and common assault.

The organization’s main objectives are:

1. To provide a safe space, support and educating women, and children who are victims of sexual, domestic and family violence about their rights, to be able to live freely and without fear.

2. To provide support for women, young girls and children who are infected and affected with HIV/AIDS, TB and STI, through education focussing on literacy so that these individuals will be able to live productive lives without fear of stigma and discrimination.

3. To assist women to become entrepreneurs through income generating activities, for example Arts and Crafts.

Bio

I believe that every human being deserves a second chance in life. I have dedicated mine and my family's life to making sure that we help and give unconditionally, to those who are marginalized, to improve the lives of women and children who are affected by HIV/AIDS, domestic, sexual and family violence, in creating tools for women to succeed.

Philisa Abafazi Bethu works with children a great deal as well. We run an after-school program most days of the week for children to have a snack and participate in extracurricular activities, so there is always something to do. Whether you're teaching a musical instrument at a music camp, or playing a board game with a group of kids, working with Care is a unique and rewarding experience....

We run an IT teaching program that gives back to the women of Philisa Abafazi Bethu and also to the community of Lavender Hill in general. By teaching interested students skills in the Microsoft Office suite, business skills (such as writing a business letter and creating a CV), and general things about the Windows Operating System, the volunteer teachers are able to pass on skills needed in...

One of the ventures we are seeking to expand at Philisa Abafazi is our sustainable farming project. We are especially looking for people with farming expertise that can help us start an organic food garden working with the women - we had someone doing this previously, but now the position is vacant! By starting this project, we give the women valuable skills for growing healthy food for use...
