Overall Experience:
Despite the awareness of many children’s poor home conditions, every morning when you take your first step inside the day care you fill up with joy when you hear about 20 children calling “teacher, teacher, teacher” whilst running towards you for a hug. Just after a month we could already see so many amazing developments. Children that in the beginning sat quietly and scared in a corner, were later trying to count to five and sing along to our songs. To be part of that is such a wonderful feeling that you really cannot describe in words. This volunteer experience has not only given us memories for a lifetime, it has also made us appreciate everything that we, not least our children, in the first world take for granted. Here, in Scandinavia, children do not even have to think that they would need to play with old and broken toys or that their parents will leave them alone on the streets or in the shacks a whole day because of work commitments etc. For the children in Westlake, these things are daily occurrences. Cynthia, the founder of the project is the most loving and caring person we've ever met. She and her entire family have really given up and reshaped their lives so much for all these children for them to have a more decent life. Me and my sister spend four weeks at Jabulani Daycare and we have never ever experienced a such difficult goodbye in our entire lives. It's unbelievable how close you can get to a family and all those kids in just 4 weeks. Not a day passes without us thinking of them, our South African family, and as soon as we can, we will absolutely come back to see them again! That the first years of a child’s life is the most shapeable is a fact that cannot be underestimated. To be part of that and celebrate these children’s achievements and get them to show their talents - there is no greater gift to give! /Sara Thronée & Helena Berg, Sweden
