Organization Description
Tender Heart Educational Society is a charitable non-profit non-governmental organization in India. The mission of Tender Heart is to uplift and to provide social and educational opportunities for disadvantaged children and children with special needs in the city of Faridabad and in the rural villages of northern India. Additionally, we want to create employment opportunities by imparting vocational training to widows and underprivileged young women in the village of Bhatola. We are working towards alleviating the poverty in the rural villages of Northern India as they merge with the urbanized paradigm.

OUR PROJECTS:

Rural Children Education

The school began over 15 years ago on a piece of vacant land in rural India, adjacent to a village that lacked any school. Initially, the school was not welcome. Parents saw no value in having their children (especially their daughters) spend time in a classroom rather than working on family land. We stood firm in the face of threats and started teaching children. Now the school is an important part of life in what is still a poor community.

Women Empowerment

The aim of this project is to teach basic job skills to women in local rural villages. These women are now manufacturing a variety of handicraft products such as handbags, laptop cases, wallets, scarves, folders and jewellery.

All are paid a fair wage, and the women set their own prices for the products. When the women receive their first wages, they're encouraged to use it to buy things for themselves instead of turning it over to their husbands. This has done a tremendous amount to instil pride.

Special Needs Program

The children of the special needs program here at Tender Heart is was developed for the benefit of differently-abled students. We strongly believe in supporting their achievement both academically and professionally.

In addition to an academic curriculum, the students learn vocational skills such as manufacturing chalk, paper bowls, and recycled newspaper bags. The chalk is sold by the students to schools in the local vicinity. We also provide music therapy.

To provide as many opportunities as possible, our students also train and compete in the Special Olympics. In 2013, our students were awarded 13 medals at the Sydney Special Olympics, 4 of them gold!

Many of our students have gone on to be productive and proud young women and men because of the skills gained through this program.

Slum Children Education

There are many children, especially those of itinerant workers, who cannot afford even the meagre fees to attend school. For some students, their parents simply do not see the need.

These labourers are paid periodically based on the number of days worked, and it is common for paymasters to cheat them by paying less than what they have earned. For labourers who do not know how to count, it is an easy scam.

Tender Heart opened an after school program to help reach the needs of these children. Any child who shows up is given basic education in mathematics, reading, writing, and English. This program is helpful to all generations, as the children are encouraged to help their fathers calculate the payments due to them.

It is wonderful to see how many children show up voluntarily for these classes, and to see how enthusiastic they are about learning all that they can.
