Organization Description
At the Refuge for Wildlife we Rescue, Rehabilitate and return to the Jungle injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife While we rescue all wildlife the Howler Monkey has become our speciality. The Refuge for Wildlife was founded in 1999 and is now a Costa Rican Non-Profit Foundation and one of only 4 Government Certified Wildlife Rescue Centers in Costa Rica. Refuge volunteer duties will include cleaning of habitats, food preparation, feeding of injured and orphaned wildlife, participation in wildlife rescues and releases.

The Nosara Refuge for Wildlife is in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. We are located in the Las Haucus section of Nosara. The town of Nosara is central for the small local airport, post office, library and super market. Nosara also includes 3 the beaches Playa Garza, Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada. Las Huacus is located on a hill overlooking Playa Guiones.
Playa Guiones is a great little town with plenty of restaurants, shops and grocery mini marts. Playa Guiones also has several hostels, homes and hotels. Most of our volunteers stay in Playa Guiones. It is a 45 minute walk uphill to (at least it is downhill on the way home from) the RFW. A tuk tuk (small taxi cab) is a C4000 ($8) ride each way. Some volunteers take a tuk tuk up to the RFW and walk down at the end of their shift.

Volunteering at the Refuge requires training of daily protocols and handling of the wild animals. The amount of training it takes to work here is only useful if you can commit to at least one month, 4 full work days a week. We have Howlers of all ages with different needs. To work at the Refuge is to work with the Howlers. We are not a zoo. We are an orphanage, a hospital and a forever home for animals that can not be released.

Refuge for Wildlife requires that you are in Nosara for at least 3 days before your volunteer work begins. If you are not 100% healthy, please do NOT come to the refuge. The monkeys are very sensitive to our virus's, flues and colds.

You will receive a certificate for the amount of days and hours you have volunteered. A detailed letter of recommendation with your experience and training you received at the RFW. This is an amazing opportunity if you can dedicate yourself to this worthy cause.

Coffee and sweet bread are available for a morning snack, but we do not provide lunches. We recommend that you bring your lunches as there is no where close by to purchase food.

We have very limited space for accommodation at the RFW. It cost $150 /week and includes a small breakfast of sweet bread, fruit, coffee or tea. Small basic lunch and dinner is available of beans, rice, or arroz con pollo. Please specify in your message for the availability if you are interested in staying at the Refuge for Wildlife.

Another detail to consider is transportation to and from the RFW. Walking, tuk tuks (CR taxis) or renting a vehicle are the most popular choices. Depending on where you stay the walk is an average of 45 minutes. Tuk Tuks average C4000 ($8) each way. Some volunteers take a tuk tuk in the morning and walk home. Rental cars or ATVs are available in town and the prices vary.
