Organization Description
The way people travel has changed. We want to be travelers, experience the local culture that is hosting us, learn from it, understand its reality and make a positive impact.

This is precisely what Perú Social offers. Through our two and three-week programs, participants visit some of Peru’s iconic destinations while being involved in the development of underprivileged areas of Lima, always guided by social workers with years of experience in such communities and a profound understanding of their problems.

Participants will be hosted at the Volunteer Home, located in Miraflores, Lima’s cultural, culinary and leisure district.

VOLUNTEER PROJECTS

Perú Social partners with Peruvian institutions and individuals who have years of experience and commitment to social initiatives to improve the quality of life of hundreds of citizens in some of the ‘pueblos jóvenes’ or shantytowns of Lima, the most underprivileged and forgotten communities in the capital Peru.

All projects take place in different ‘pueblos jóvenes’ of the district of San Juan de Miraflores, located 45 minutes away from the Volunteer Home in Miraflores. Perú Social provides daily transportation between the Volunteer Home and the project sites.

We offer our volunteers three areas in which they can cooperate:

Education
The single most important challenge that many families in Perú face is access to basic education. Although significant improvements have been made in recent years, thousands of children in Lima’s unprivileged districts are not receiving quality education. At Perú Social, we deeply believe that volunteers can play an essential role in changing the face of education in Perú. With this belief in mind, we have designed programs focusing on: teaching, extra-curricular activities (sports, arts and crafts, cooking…), and enrichment activities for the younger ones. Volunteers are involved in one or more of these programs depending on each volunteer’s interests and abilities. All educational programs are meticulously planned with a long-term vision to ensure their sustainability and impact.
*All volunteers teaching English must be native speakers or have a proficient level of the language.

Construction
Over the last decades, the city of Lima has grown in size after years of migration from the rainforest and the Andean regions to the capital, giving birth to dozens of informal housing areas known as ‘pueblos jóvenes’. These communities often lack adequate basic infrastructure, whether it is homes, schools, nursery homes or clinics. Through our construction program, volunteers are involved in different stages of the construction of facilities for the communities involved: transporting materials, woodworking, laying the foundations, framing, installing doors and windows, etc.

Food Sustainability
For many families in the ‘pueblos jóvenes’, having daily healthy meals is simply not possible for a number of reasons, be it financial constraints or access to quality ingredients for their meals. Our food sustainability program aims to teach inhabitants of the ‘pueblos jóvenes’ how to become self-sustainable on their own crops. Volunteers that participate in this program are involved in all phases of the agricultural cycle: preparation of soil, sowing, adding manure and fertilizers, irrigation and harvesting.

It was an incredible experience to dedicate part of my time to help others while traveling throughout Peru and making solid friendships with people with whom I share the same values. It was also convenient that the programs included trips to different destinations in Peru and everything we needed while in Lima, such as housing, pick up, drop off, and meals for a more comfortable stay and experience.
