Organization Description
EXPERIENCE RURAL GHANA

GET INVOLVED in rural Ghana and teach your skills to those in need. Nursery, primary and junior secondary school teaching and community library placements are available. Join us! You will experience the culture, the people and much more.

Rural Ghana needs you. About 98% of adults in Abetenim are unable to read or write due to poor education background. A focus of our international volunteer program is therefore on basic education of the younger generation in view that in the next 10 to 15 years, the youth of today will be educated adult leaders in the community, who will in turn influence the upcoming generation. Take the TEACHING FELLOW Challenge!

Nursery, primary and junior secondary school placements are available. Volunteers are needed to teach one or two of the following school subjects:

· English
· maths
· French
· computers
· sciences
· social studies
· arts and craft
· music
· sports, etc.

The volunteer can also get involved in designing teaching aids and working with teachers to introduce new learning techniques to improve learning outcomes among students. You will get to shadow a local teacher before leading your own lessons in the classroom or in the community library. If you are motivated about changing lives of those growing up in poverty through education and innovative learning techniques, then this is the program for you. Our program is open to university students, gap year persons, working professionals, retirees and mission trips. Learn by discovering what resources the community already has and by mobilising those assets to meet the education needs in the rural school. University students can use the opportunity for thesis, internship, or personal research.

FREE TIME ACTIVITIES

Immerse in the local culture and lifestyle. Live and work among the local people. Take part in some of the social events in the everyday life of the community, such as weddings, naming ceremonies, community labor, and meetings to gain new skills. There will be opportunities for day-trips to experience any of the regional attractions, lush forest hikes or mountain climbing, or guided tours to explore the nearby villages. Join us! Accomodation is in guest houses in the village. After school hours, you can come to the arts village to create or interact with others. And you can spend the rest of your stay collaborating with the Abetenim Women Sewing Cooperative, indigenous music group or storytellers.
