Organization Description
The Mount Camdeboo Conservation Experience is a very hands-on conservation and community outreach volunteer programme based on a private game reserve in the stunning Eastern Cape of South Africa. This particular region of South Africa has three of the least protected biomes in the country, and so it needs all the help it can get! That's where we come in.

To do our part, our small team of passionate and experienced conservationists/educators are actively rehabilitating the land back to its original state. This means that while our programme includes monitoring, research and rehabilitation of more well-known wildlife (such as cheetah and rhino), we also focus on the smaller, lesser-known flora and fauna of the Great Karoo. For us, small mammals like bat-eared foxes, aardwolf, aardvark, and birds, amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates get the same attention and dedication as cheetah and rhino. And we do plenty of hands-on work, from clearing out alien vegetation to replanting and reintroducing the indigenous plants and animals that occurred here initially. So this is certainly for people who enjoy being active, but who are also happy to sit patiently for two hours and study an aardvark if need be.

We aren’t just about wildlife, though. We also focus on community outreach and have partnered with international and local NGOs to help the impoverished communities surrounding the reserve. We assist with everything from environmental education to skills development in sustainable agriculture. And when we can, we bring local students and young adults out to the reserve to experience conservation work firsthand.

It might sound like a lot of work, but we certainly have our fair share of fun, from creating our own waterslides in mountain pools, to camping out under the stars, to kicking back with sundowners at the top of a mountain. This is such a unique and relatively undiscovered part of the world that you never know if during your time searching for scorpions you might even find a Jurassic-era fossil in the rocks. No matter what the day brings, one thing is for sure - the Mount Camdeboo Conservation Experience is an experience you'll never forget!

Mount Camdeboo Conservation Experience Average Ratings
My wife and I spent a month as volunteers at Mount Camdeboo. Our time there was filled with numerous special moments spent soaking in the timeless Karoo vistas and the host of biodiversity they contain. This is not to mention the welcoming warmth and hospitality we received front the Mount Camdeboo staff! Days filled with bird counts, game monitoring, tracking cheetahs, and sampling biodiversity felt like the furthest thing from work. The volunteer activities inspired in us a deeper passion for the unique fauna and flora of Mount Camdeboo as we understood the contribution of our work to wildlife conservation on the reserve and the broader scientific knowledge base in South Africa. The volunteer experience surpassed our expectations as we were able to appreciate both the enigmatic and...
