Organization Description
Maasai Joy is an organization with a compelling story. The founder, Ernest Kutangala, started his career as a porter for treks up Mount Kilimanjaro. From there, he learned the importance of education and the opportunities that arise from learning English in a country with a large tourism industry.

The school initially began in Ernest's backyard where he set up wooden benches and a tarp roof. As Ernest began sharing his project with his customers while trekking up Kili, he raised enough money for the construction of the first classroom. Now, the school is made up of four spacious rooms, a bathroom, dining hall and kitchen with further plans for expansion. Tucked in Maasai village twenty-minutes off the main road toward Nairobi, the site has a rural feel and is surrounded by mountains and lush landscape.

Volunteering with Maasai Joy would be a memorable and rewarding experience, especially considering Ernest's ambitions for the organization's future. This placement is ideal for someone interested in all aspects of education. We welcome the following:
Teachers of any subject that they are qualified to teach (e.g. Maths, Science, English, Vocation skills, History, Geography, Art & Design)
Working and connecting with kids in a social and fun way
First aid courses for teachers and other staff members
Training & advising teachers through workshops and other events
Learning about other public education systems

If you have any special vision of helping the school in any way, please know that Ernest is open to all kinds of ideas. Please feel free to contact him about any project or idea you have in mind. Our goal is to plant a seed for future generations by building a community of friends, donors, teachers, volunteers, and people from all walks of life!

Please understand that supplies and teaching materials are not always the easiest to come by for us here at Maasai Joy. If you have an idea of what supplemental materials you may need to teach or instruct the children, you may want to consider bringing them with you.

It is hard to find words to describe how wonderful my stay has been at the Maasai Joy Children's Center! To say the least, it is like no other life experience that I have had before. If you are truly looking to immerse yourself in a culture, you will find what you have been searching for here! Maasai Joy is located right in the heart of Maasailand. The Maasai could not be a more friendly people! Furthermore, Ernest and his family take you in and care for you as one of their own, and are as hospitable and flexible as they could possibly be. The food is delicious, there are plenty of options, and if you have to worry about one thing it is getting too full to move ;D One of the things that you will be most concerned about when traveling to a country far away to volunteer, however, is...
