CIDS4KIDS’ WORK WITH STREET CHILDREN: ‘CIDS4KIDS’ work with children who are connected to the street. Our work is more focused on the children of the street and children on the street for a host of reasons, some of which may be stress, pains, negative feelings, traumatic and disconnection from their families, community and society. The society sees them as nothing and ‘out of place’.

‘CIDS4KIDS’ have values of justice, equality, human dignity and solidarity for them knowing that they are also the reasons for Sierra Leone and they can also makes a meaningful contribution to the development of the country if they are adequately cared for and protected.

‘CIDS4KIDS’ work with children especially those on the street is developed through the relationship between child and adult. Our recent and past successes are on the relationship between our committed street workers and the street children. We motivate the children to change risky lifestyles by applying the 6 cycles of change.

We develop relationship of trust and friendship with street children; we build up confidence, esteem, security, self-belief and help improving their wellbeing, we develop relationships of trust, friendships and confidence with the society and children in the street.

We meet with community heads, Chiefs, traditional heads, market heads, garage owners. We talk with them concerning the predicament, circumstances, market places, garages, unfinished dilapidated houses and the situational crisis in which the street children found themselves in.

We educate communities to be aware of the rights of the children and the need to cooperate with us to help them out of the street.

We inform the communities about the right of those children in the street and how they should be treated as children not as adult. How they must treat the children with love, respect and give them chance to speak out their minds as they listening to them and thus help them get out of the street.

We inform stakeholders to involve on helping those children who are already on the street especially the children of the street. In our work we involve community stakeholders to help in stopping the inflow of children on the street. 1000s of the children on the street of our cities were not born on the street, they are born in homes be it in urban or rural homes. 1000s of them are on the street of our cities today because of the rough and brutal ways and disrespectful and regardless manners are treated at home made them to result on the street.
Some of the major factors responsible for the constant inflow of children on the street are:

1. Parents lack of knowledge of the rights of children. In Sierra Leone 80% of current household heads were not sent to school by their parents so they cannot read and write. When they were children, their parents treated them as adults; they did not know anything such as child’s rights. They are doing the same to their children today.

2. Cultural causes: In our society millions of people especially household heads and wives strongly holds on to the value of their cultures even if they are detrimental to the health, safety, education, respect, rights, justice, freedom and development of their children.

3. Political causes: Our society has been politicized to a level that issues of child abuses and rights violation are sometimes not treated seriously. Laws passed by government authorities are not enforced on the people so many people do not take issues of child rights as serious/important.

4. ECONOMIC CAUSES: Poverty is the order of the day in our society were people live below 1 dollar a day. Where we have poorer people than average poor. Economic constrains in households causes 1000s of children whose parents cannot provide the daily adequate food a day to prefer living on the street than living with parents/relatives. We have too many children on the street of our cities as child prostitutes.

5. NATURAL/SICKNESS CAUSES: Many children are also on the street as results of misappropriation of inheritable properties by relatives or caregivers. According to UNICEF 12 thousand children are made orphans by the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone and 7 thousand of them are on the streets of Freetown and other major cities in the country. About 3 thousand of them are living with extended relatives under inadequate care and protection. 2 thousand of them are in children homes.

SOME COMMON PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH STREET CHILDREN
1. STREET ABUSE.
2. DRUG ADDICTION
3. INJUSTICE
4. LACK OF PROTECTION
5. NO EDUCATION
6. NO ACCESS TO SOCIAL SERVICES
7. NO ACCESS TO MEDICAL SERVICES
ETC……….

Our work also entails street corner counseling and also creates positive friendship with street children, we also educates them – formal and informal. Our work also creating links with legal professionals for legal assistance especially for children that faces challenges with the law. We liaison with the Police (family support unit) and probationary officers at community and national level in the Ministry of Social Welfare. We also liaison with hospitals and other health clinics for medical assistance incase of sexual assault and rape

We are also working towards livelihood options and training for after street children so as to avoid the possibility of relapse. We re-unite families with children on the street. Children on the street are children who visit their families regularly and might even returns every night
to sleep at home but spend most days and some nights on the street. These set of street children can easily re-unite with their families. The set of street of children who are difficult to get re-unite with their families are the children of the street set. These children don’t have families, no home to sleep, no hope for the future, no one to look after them, no medical facility, no sanitary and no education.

We try to address causes that leads children to the street by identifying the individual causes that lead them to the street, investigating the cause, identifying the causer for legal action and find possible means of assistance to the child for a safe place and support.

We promote and defend the right of children , we promote by informing people that the children have rights to care, justice and protection, the children have right to be listen to and be heard on matters that concerns their living, opinion, protection and participation.

According to some of our findings we discovered that 1000s of street children were lead to the street by situational crisis. Crises that they don’t planned for, crisis that reduces their families to nothing in life. Crisis that destroyed their hopes and dreams. Crisis that made them lost their families to death and perpetual poverty, same and disgrace. Crisis that made them to be use as slaves in their own community and country. Crisis that made them lack food and place to sleep and crisis that has made them to become child prostitute and child mothers.

The street children deserve the right to a safe environment to develop in; they have the right to trustworthy, caring and committed adult in their lives. We mediate on behalf of children whose voices are not heard even the hardest to reach. We provide access to legal advice and provide a point of access for police intervention incase of child abuse at homes and for police to refer children to.

We also work to wipe away the negative feelings and thoughts held against street children by the community. We collaborate with the street children and communities to reduce the children exposure to risk. We enable street children to create better relationships with estrange family member and the wider community even with those who have negative view of street children and this is best achieved by effective and committed collaboration and cooperation.

Our street workers behavior towards street children is yielding successes because they have empathy, passion, patience, they are caring and are very sensitive to the feelings and actions of street children and mostly they are committed. We also work with street children to build their capacity to cope with trauma, stress, pain and calamities.
