What its like being an Organization and hosting Volunteers

We've spoken with first time Volunteer Danielle (click here to read full blog), a 20 year old student from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and recently returned Volunteer.

Now its time to hear from the Organization where Danielle volunteered, Cheap Impact, and the Korando Educational Center, a free school for over 200 students in Kisumu, Kenya.

We asked Torsten, the co-founder of Cheap Impact to share a little about his why he asks for Volunteers and why he chooses Volunteer Alliance.

Over to Torsten.

My name is Torsten Kremser, I am the Co-Founder of Cheap Impact. Our Organization is based just outside Kisumu in western Kenya where we support the Korando Educational Center and its founder Mama Dolfine. Mama Dolfine founded the Korando Educational Center, a school and orphanage for 200+ children. And we developed Cheap Impact to help bring financial sustainability and better infrastructure to the center.

Cheap Impact needs Volunteers to help us to achieve our aims.

The normal Kenyan school system is very stiff and theoretical. It is full of useless information and lacks creativity. And while we can't change the syllabus, day to day our Volunteers help with our teaching, and bring color to the classroom with their creativity and different cultures. This also teaches our children about the world.

We chose Volunteer Alliance to help us find more of the right Volunteers. Volunteer Alliance is a well-established non-profit platform on a mission to support the local project by directly connecting them with volunteers, thereby avoiding the profit-hungry placement organisations who’s money barely reaches the projects on the ground.

With Volunteer Alliance the Volunteers can get in touch with us directly. The Volunteers fee is much lower than a normal placement organization. And because they are getting in touch with us directly, they know that there money is going directly to the project.

I also think Volunteer Alliance is better for the Volunteers. Volunteer Alliance protects the Volunteer. If the Volunteer is not satisfied or something goes wrong, they will refund the fee. If we don’t fulfil our promise then they will be reimbursed.

This is great because the Volunteer is safe – he knows that whatever money he puts in will go to the cause that is described and supports the project as well as his own stay – or he can complain and get his money back.

This way its also in the Organizations best interests to keep the Volunteer happy and show that the money goes to the right place – which avoids a lot of corruption.

I love it because it means we get more of the right Volunteers. And the Volunteers bring so much joy, fun, laughter. Our children enjoyed the love and attention that our last Volunteer from Volunteer Alliance, Danielle gave them so much. Pure happiness.

Our Volunteers bring a lot of energy and happiness, they are here for the children, the children are really enjoying their time with the Volunteers.

I can't wait for our next Volunteer!

We have filmed an 5 part Video playlist with Torsten. Watch Torsten at Cheap Impact's full Organization testimonial Video playlist here.
